Horror Film Poster Anlaysis

Film Poster Analysis

Prom Night and Scream are the films we chose that we felt linked to our horror movie trailer. The poster for Prom Night is very dark and mysterious for the reason being it doesn’t show the identity of the person on the front cover. This ultimately shows it is a horror movie as dark and mysterious are a horror movie paradigm. The main focus of the whole poster, I feel, is the tiara and her teeth, as they stand out the most, are eye catching and are the brightest objects on the poster. The title Prom Night is written in red to symbolise blood, again this shows the paradigms of a horror movie. The statement underneath “a night to die for” is a slight play on words as a prom night is a night to remember and a night everyone gets excited for. The saying a night to die for, is a common saying however as this is a horror movie, the word die has both meanings to die, as in death, and to die, as to be thrilled.  The poster is very simple but to the point, as it just has her face, the tiara, the title of the film and a statement, however all of those make the poster a great poster to convey a horror film, instead of adding props and characters to fill up the poster and complicate it. The poster for Scream is roughly the same as Prom Night as it is very simple and to the point. The poster has just one character on the front, her facial expression, the title of the film and a statement. The poster again is very dark and mysterious as it doesn’t really show the identity of the person on the front. This again is a horror movie code and convention to be dark and mysterious. The title of the movie is written in white, to stand out and be eye catching against the characters face. The letter M on the end of Scream, is very pointy in the middle, this could show the point of a knife or possibly the point in direction. The statement at the top of the poster is also written in white, and states “someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far. Solving this mystery is going to be murder”, this statement shows the audience the concept of the movie but also a riddle to the film. The last part states “solving this mystery is going to be murder” is also a play on words as it says its going to be murder in the fact that it is going to be difficult in finding the killer however it also shows the audience that in a way of finding the killer, people will be murder. Having a statement on the poster both to do with death, is a great way of pointing out that in fact this is a horror movie poster but in a subtle way without actually saying someone is going to die or offend the audience.
