Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) –
The narrative structure for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is that at the beginning the non-diegetic sound is all calm with a lady singing soft music; this gives the audience the illusion that everything is ok and nothing is going to happen, this is the first point of the narrative structure- called period of equilibrium. Then the moment of disequilibrium is 33 seconds into the trailer, a female character says “their all dead”. This shows the audience that something is going to happen and nothing is going to be the same again. The point of the period of new equilibrium is when the non-diegetic sound changes to a fast pace orchestra with heavy bass. This builds the audiences hear t rate, builds up tension and excitement. The editing of the trailer is; at the beginning is slow and calm then at the first point of equilibrium, the editing starts to speed up, to again to build up excitement and tension. This then goes into montage editing and lets the audience piece together the story, with the face pace jump cuts and fade to black transitions. They use jump cuts to mirror the audiences emotions and reactions towards the trailer so your heart would be beating faster therefore the jump cuts go quicker to add effect and to make you feel part of the action. In the beginning of the trailer, they are travelling in a car, on a road trip and the mid-shot shows the audience that the car is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded and isolated. This conforms to the codes and conventions of a horror film. Other forms of codes and conventions in this trailer, is that in the car the group of teenagers are flirting and doing drugs, this is a sin and as they are committing sin they are bound to end up dead. Also them being a group of teenagers, this also conforms to the codes and conventions of a horror film. The chainsaw represents iconography and is also part of the codes and conventions.
