Horror Film Trailer Review...

The Descent (2004) –

The beginning of the trailer starts off with a group of women driving in car down a road that is isolated and secluded, they all laugh and are enjoying themselves, this is the point of period of equilibrium, as everything is all calm. One of the characters states “there is only one way out” this shows the audience that they are going to be completely isolated. The period of disequilibrium is when one of the women gets trapped in a tunnel and the rocks start to crumble, this is the point that something happens and all the action start. The sound at the beginning is quite calm as they are planning to have a good time, then when the period of disequilibrium starts, the sound begins to change to a fast pace heart racing sound that speed up faster as more of the jump action goes on, this makes the audience feel as if they are part of the film. The fade to black shots and montage editing used throughout the trailer gives the effect that it is all happening at once and makes the audience piece together the story lime of the film. The codes and conventions of this horror trailer is that; there are a group of women all together that are going to be isolated, they go to a place that is all dark, tight and with only one way out. Also they are in the middle of nowhere so therefore the isolation increases. With the place being all dark in re-enforces the primal fears of the dark and enhances the fear of the unknown. Most of the shots used within the trailer are point of view shots to make the viewers feel as if there are there, and makes it more realistic. This trailer is similar to Texas Chainsaw Massacre as they both have fade to black, have a group that are isolated and has a lot of darkness.
