Drag Me to Hell (2009) –
The trailer at the beginning, is different from all of the other trailers, as normally at the beginning it has the codes and conventions of a horror film really obvious, such as a group or a couple on a trip isolated, however in this trailer it starts off with a lady in an office in a busy city and the establishing shot of a busy highway. This shows that this film may not conform to all the codes and conventions. The non-diegetic sound is of a calm plying piano this shows that everything is ok and seems as if nothing is going to happen, this is the point of the first part of the narrative structure – the period of equilibrium. The point of the period of disequilibrium is when the old lady falls to the floor and begs, as the calm sound stops and this makes the audience feel as if from this point something bad is going to happen. The sound suddenly stops and you see the main female character walking in an empty car part and her getting in her car, then an old lady breaks the window and the non-diegetic sound of screeching shocks the audience and makes them feel on the edge of their seats. This point could also be the period of disequilibrium as you know from that point something bad is going to happen, the sound starts to change and the shots get faster. The codes and conventions for this trailer is that there is a last girl theory but in a different way as she is the only main girl and she probably isn’t a virgin, also that there is a lot of crosses and religion presented in the trailer to show and conform with the title of “Drag Me To Hell.”
